Vegan Is Not Always Healthy, Neither Plant Based! Or is it?

 May, 6 2017

Wait, Wait, Wait, before you all jump on me, but vegan is healthy etc.

Yap, I am an advocate of Vegan/Plant Based lifestyle, I have nothing bad to write about that part, but I do have allot to say about business who take “the ride” on the vegan lifestyle. It is only my own opinion so please don’t take what I say in this post as facts, it is simply my opinion.

I was invited by close a friend of mine to a new restaurant down town Toronto, called “Planta”, on Bay street and Cumberland.  http://www.plantatoronto.com/

She told me it is a new vegan place, I heard about it from 2 other people and when she offered I got really excited. dinning out is not really my thing and normally I like one place in particular when going out. However, I am flexible enough to try new things.

Anyway, why this post come-up? when I looked in the menu, a lot of items were defined in “carnivorous spelling”, such as fish, bacon, meet etc, which normally, in vegan places you will have an explanation in the menu of the meaning or the ingredients of those items.  Since there was non, I asked the waitress (which by the way, service was great and kind) if all the items on the menu are VEGAN. Using specifically the word vegan.

Before saying yes or no, she did take the time to clear that they do not call it vegan, since that for them means that you take a vegan lifestyle and they call it Plant based, and only after clarifying that, she said it is plant-based.

For me; Plant Based is Vegan and HEALTHY, that’s how I perceive plant-based. and vegan to me, is simply no animal ingredients, but has not necessarily healthy. fries could be vegan yet, far from being healthy, personally, I find it hard to say; “here have fries it is plant-based, even though they are in most cases vegan, (most cases, cause some are being fried in beef or pigs oil, yes, I was shocked as well).

Yes, it is the semantic of wording, and normally I would not even bother taking the time to write it up, but you already opened a vegan place, that basically serves “regular” style food without animal products. dip fried veggies, pizza, and more, don’t get me wrong, this post is not about good or bad food, the pizza was delicious, but please, take pride using the word VEGAN as well in your restaurant, verses creating an impression of plant-based.

So at the end of the day, if you wish to enjoy a good dine out experience good vegan food, go and enjoy it, it was great.

My point is: The fact that something is either vegan or plant-based doesn’t make it automatically healthy. It took me many years and I am still learning MY OWN definition of healthy. so let us all keep explore.

Yours Ilan Halfon

No Pain No Gain

We all heard the term: “No Pain No Gain”, I use it quite often with myself, sometimes even with my trainees. However, I am not sure people actually understand the meaning of it. We tend to confuse between pain of stupidity to pain of wisdom, between the physical pain of hard work to the pain of a fracture or a nerve. The pain of a fracture might be to signal us that we are on the wrong path. A pain of a nerve could try to say that maybe we are pushing too much, a pain of stupidity could be when you think you should jump higher than you ever practice for or before, or when you just go for a marathon run when you never run for 10 km in a row. All those versions of pain could not be and should not be part of that statement. Believe me when I say, that it is more painful to push through mentally when a thing seems statics then physically when you can feel the wrong pain. It is easier to say to yourself “if I don’t feel the physical pain I probably don’t push hard enough”, then to kee...

A Path to True Wellness and Balance

In the pursuit of a healthy life, we strive for balance, aim to maintain our health, and seek happiness within ourselves and our daily lives. While achieving this may seem straightforward, many of us face regular challenges in doing so. We often hide behind our screens, offering advice and sharing personal stories in an attempt to guide others. Yet, when we delve deeper, we find that issues such as obesity, depression, lack of joy, stress, and anxiety persist. So, what’s the key? I believe that self-reflection—practiced often, even daily—can lead us toward our desired goals. The first step is to define your destination: what does wellness truly mean to you? According to the Google Dictionary: Well: in a good or satisfactory way. Ness: denoting a state or condition. However, defining wellness alone isn’t enough to help you reach your aspirations. It requires your personal experiences, objectives, and passions to truly shape it. Begin by asking yourself: What does "well" me...
